FAQ
Everything you need to know before downloading — and a few things you'll want to know after.
General
Backlog Zero is a desktop app for managing your game library across multiple platforms. It brings your Steam, GOG, Epic, Amazon, and Xbox games into one place — so you can track what you own, what you've played, and what's next.
Yes, completely free. No subscription, no ads, no account required.
Backlog Zero is available for Mac and Windows.
Steam, GOG Galaxy, Epic Games, Amazon Games, and Xbox. PC Game Pass catalog is also included.
Setup & Accounts
No. Backlog Zero runs entirely on your computer. Your data stays local — nothing is sent to any server.
Steam's API requires a free key to access your library data automatically. You can get one in about 30 seconds at steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey — just log in and register any URL. Paste the key into Settings and you're done.
Backlog Zero reads your GOG Galaxy database directly from your computer — no export needed. GOG Galaxy must be installed and you need to have logged in at least once so your library has synced locally.
The easiest way is through Heroic Games Launcher — a free, open source app that manages Epic and Amazon libraries. Install Heroic, log into your accounts, let it sync, then import in Backlog Zero Settings.
If you don't use Heroic, you can export a CSV from each platform manually.
Backlog Zero uses OpenXBL — a free community-built Xbox Live API. Create a free account at xbl.io, connect your Xbox account, and copy your API key into Settings.
Unlike Steam and GOG, Xbox does not provide a list of games you own. Instead, Backlog Zero imports games you have played based on your achievement history — so only titles you've launched at least once will appear. Games you own but have never played won't be imported automatically.
To add an Xbox game that isn't showing up, right-click any game in your library and select Add Game to add it manually.
Features
Steam games get cover art automatically from Steam's CDN. For GOG, Epic, and other platforms, Backlog Zero uses IGDB — the Internet Game Database. You'll need free Twitch developer credentials to enable this. Go to dev.twitch.tv/console, register an application, and copy your Client ID and Secret into Settings.
Backlog Zero integrates with gg.deals for price tracking across 40+ stores. You'll need a free API key from gg.deals/api. Add games to your Wishlist, set a target price, and Backlog Zero will alert you when the price drops.
The Identity Dossier is your personal gaming profile — it analyzes your play patterns and assigns you an archetype based on how you actually play. Are you a Collector, a Completionist, a Ghost? Your library already knows. The Dossier just makes it visible.
A quarterly snapshot of how your library changed — backlog growth, completion rate, top genre, longest session, and more. Found on the Identity Dossier page.
Yes. Backlog Zero automatically detects when Steam games are running and logs your sessions. You can also start sessions manually for any game on any platform from the game detail view.
The Discover page helps you decide what to play next. It includes personalized Play Next recommendations, Hidden Gems from your backlog, a Find Similar tool, and decision tools like Curate and Surprise Me.
Data & Privacy
Everything is stored locally on your computer. Backlog Zero does not have servers, does not collect your data, and does not require an internet connection to use your library.
Yes — go to Settings and export your full library as JSON or CSV at any time.
Yes, as long as you export a backup first. Use Settings → Export JSON Backup before reinstalling, then import it after.
Yes for everything except price checking, cover art fetching, and platform sync — those require an internet connection.
Troubleshooting
Make sure your Steam ID and API key are both entered correctly in Settings. Your Steam profile visibility must be set to Public. If it still fails, try clicking Re-sync Steam Library.
Make sure GOG Galaxy is installed and you've logged in at least once. The app reads the local database directly — if GOG Galaxy has never synced your library, there's nothing to read.
Click Fetch Missing Art in Settings to trigger a background fetch. For games without Steam App IDs, you can search for cover art manually from the game detail view.
API keys expire occasionally. Go to gg.deals/api, generate a new key, and paste it into Settings → Price Tracking.
The best way to get an answer is to download the app and see for yourself. It's free and takes about two minutes to set up.
